We’re excited to announce that top calligrapher Peter Halliday is returning to Lichfield Cathedral later this month with a new workshop that will help you to connect with the Anglo-Saxon mind. Peter was the Curator of ‘Holy Writ’, the highly successful exhibition of modern calligraphy held at the Cathedral in 2014.
•A chance to learn about techniques and materials used in Anglo-Saxon manuscripts and illumination, including the cutting of quills and the preparations of vellum and pigments.
•Have a go at writing in the style of the St Chad Gospels and other Anglo-Saxon hands.
•Proceeds from this event will support the Cathedral.
No previous experience needed but willingness to have a go essential.
Some materials and equipment will be available on the day but if you have any of the following, please bring them: layout pad, calligraphy pens, ink, pencils.
Please note: Lunch is not provided. The lunch break will be 45 minutes. Chapters, the Cafe in The Close, is two minutes’ walk from College Hall and serves light meals. Packed lunches may be eaten in College Hall.

About Peter Halliday
Peter Halliday graduated from Medway College of Art in 1960 with a National Diploma in Design, specialising in Writing, Illuminating and Lettering. He was a full-time teacher until his retirement in 1992 as Head of the Faculty of Art and Design at John Taylor High School in Barton-under-Needwood in Staffordshire. Since then, he has expanded his parallel career as a freelance calligrapher and lettering artist. Peter has taught and lectured widely in the British Isles and USA. He has written, edited and contributed to many books on calligraphy and lettering. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators in 1976 and was Chairman from 1981-85. He was a founding member of Letter Exchange and is the Founder Chairman and Honoured Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society. Peter has exhibited throughout the UK and in the USA and Europe. His works are held in the Collection of Contemporary Calligraphy in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and in the Houghton Library, Harvard University, USA. He also has work in many public and private collections. In a recent introduction to an exhibition catalogue he was described as “having an international reputation as one of the foremost calligraphers and teachers in the western world. Outstanding both in his originality of design and in beauty of execution, his work has for many years been at the forefront of contemporary lettering art.”
