Lichfield Cathedral Joins Prestigious Cathedrals' Workshop Fellowships as 12th Member

In a significant stride towards the preservation and advancement of traditional craft skills, Lichfield Cathedral proudly announces its induction into the renowned Cathedrals' Workshop Fellowship (CWF) as its twelfth esteemed member. This momentous occasion marks a new chapter in the cathedral's legacy, as it embarks on establishing a works department and workshop facility on its historic grounds. The emergence of Lichfield Cathedral's works department holds profound significance. The cathedral becomes the latest institution to establish such a facility since Chester cathedral in 2019, underscoring the growing acknowledgment of the necessity to cultivate and perpetuate critical craft skills across the UK. This forward-thinking approach ensures that the nation's heritage remains safeguarded and that these magnificent architectural treasures stand resilient.
Thanks to the visionary support of the Hamish Ogston Foundation (HOF) and its transformative Craft Training Programme, which has committed a remarkable £3.5 million to the training of skilled craftspeople across the UK, Lichfield Cathedral will now train two stonemasons. This initiative represents a resolute commitment to the preservation and enhancement of ancient crafts, as well as a forward-looking approach to maintaining and enriching the nation's architectural heritage.
"The Cathedrals' Workshop Fellowships (CWF) is delighted to welcome Lichfield Cathedral as our twelfth member at this exciting time for both our organisations," states Frances Cambrook, Executive Director of CWF. "As we witness a significant nationwide effort in the sustainable conservation of historic buildings and the acquisition and retention of craft skills, Lichfield's inclusion is a testament to the collective dedication to preserving our rich heritage."
Lichfield Cathedral's embrace of the CWF signifies a harmonious synergy between tradition and innovation. Simon Warburton, Executive Director of Lichfield Cathedral, emphasises, "This alliance propels us into a promising era of collaboration and growth. With the unwavering support of the Hamish Ogston Foundation and the guidance of the Cathedrals' Workshop Fellowship, Lichfield Cathedral is poised to thrive as a centre of expertise in both heritage preservation and artisanal craftsmanship in Staffordshire."
The generous grant from the Cathedrals’ Workshop Fellowship and Hamish Ogston Foundation will enable Lichfield Cathedral to welcome two new stone masons to its ranks, setting the stage for further expansion and the cultivation of a flourishing community of artisans. As the cathedral's works department gains momentum, it aims to spearhead internal restoration projects and enhance the quality and quantity of stonemasonry skills within the region, thus fortifying the rich tapestry of traditional craftsmanship.
Lichfield Cathedral's inclusion within the distinguished Cathedrals' Workshop Fellowships network ushers it into an association of esteemed institutions, including Canterbury, Chester, Durham, Exeter, Gloucester, Lincoln, Salisbury, Westminster Abbey, Winchester, Worcester, and York Minster. This affiliation opens doors to collaborative efforts with neighbour member cathedrals, such as Chester and Worcester, who are poised to support Lichfield on its exciting journey.
As Lichfield Cathedral embarks on this transformative journey, it radiates an aura of anticipation and excitement. The integration into the Cathedrals' Workshop Fellowship and the collaborative efforts with the Hamish Ogston Foundation stand as a testament to the cathedral's dedication to preserving the past while crafting a vibrant future.
