Wildflower Meadows

This year we’re leaving some of our grass to grow longer to give wildflowers a chance to get established.
After children from Lichfield Cathedral School had surveyed the species amongst the long grass, we cut back the grass behind St Chad’s statue.
Our volunteers had help from Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. We used a traditional scythe as well as an electric-powered strimmer. The cut grass was all raked up. The long grass nearer to the South Transept is being left through the summer as a wildlife meadow.
One significant plant that is already doing well is yellow-rattle, which will reduce the dominance of the taller grasses and allow more traditional wild flowers such as knapweed and oxeye daisy to flower in future years.
