Discover the Sacred Journey of the English Bible

Lichfield Cathedral is proud to present "Book of Books: The Story of the English Bible," a fascinating exhibition running from March 8 to July 20, 2025. This extraordinary showcase invites visitors to explore the fascinating evolution of the Bible from Latin manuscripts to English translations that shaped our history, culture, and faith.

A Treasury of Sacred Texts

Step into Lichfield Cathedral and witness an unparalleled collection of biblical treasures spanning centuries. The exhibition features the cathedral's own St Chad Gospels from 730 CE, an exceptionally rare 15th century Wycliffe New Testament manuscript, a spectacular first edition of Henry VIII's Great Bible, and precious editions of the 1611 Authorised Bible.

These remarkable artefacts tell the compelling story of how the Bible transformed from exclusive Latin manuscripts accessible only to clergy into the most widely published book in the English language.

Why Visit This Exhibition?

The Bible isn't just a religious text — it's a cornerstone of English literary heritage that influenced everything from our language to our laws. At Lichfield Cathedral, you'll discover:

  • How early translators risked their lives to make scripture accessible to ordinary people
  • The political intrigue surrounding Henry VIII's authorisation of the first official English Bible
  • The artistic beauty of illuminated manuscripts created by dedicated scribes
  • How the translation of sacred texts sparked religious reformation across England
  • The fascinating journey from the St Chad Gospels to modern biblical translations
  • Whether you're a history enthusiast, art lover, literary scholar, or person of faith, this exhibition offers a unique window into the cultural evolution that shaped modern England.

Plan Your Visit

The "Book of Books" exhibition is open during regular cathedral visiting hours from March 8 to July 20, 2025. Entry is by donation, making this exhibition accessible to all.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to witness these extraordinary biblical treasures gathered together and discover the courageous individuals who risked everything to bring the Bible's words into our native tongue.
