Free Exhibition Explores the Story of Lichfield Cathedral

A new exhibition is opening on 22 April until 3 September at Lichfield Cathedral. The exhibition entitled Library & Legacy, explores the story of Lichfield Cathedral’s library collection and its links to the famous Seymour family.

The Library at Lichfield Cathedral is a treasure-trove of history that is quite unique compared to other cathedral libraries. After losing all but a few precious books from the mediaeval library during the English Civil War a gift of over 400 books was made to the Cathedral in 1673. A bequest from the then Duchess of Somerset, Francis Devereaux, saw the private collection of her late husband, William Seymour, kick-start the library collection as we know it today.

Library & Legacy, takes visitors on a journey through the history of the library and some of fascinating books that reflect the wide-ranging interests of a wealthy intellectual in the 17th century. This engaging exhibition gives visitors insights into those interests from maps and architecture, to classical literature and swordsmanship. It is a unique opportunity to take a look at some exceptionally rare and important pieces of history and delve into the lifestyle of 17th century aristocracy.

The exhibition can be found in the stunning 13th Century Chapter House and is free to visit during usual visiting opening times (Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:00, Sunday 12:00-17:00).

The Chapter of Lichfield Cathedral is grateful to National Manuscripts Conservation Trust, the Leche Trust and the Idlewild Trust for funding conservation in preparation for this exhibition. Their grants have supported essential works to the Armorial of the Garter and Froissart's Chronicles of the Hundred Years War, enabling them to be included on display.
