Country’s Youngest Head Verger

26-year-old Adam Wilson has become the youngest Head Verger in the country after taking on the role of Dean’s Verger at Lichfield Cathedral.
Adam says being a verger was always in his blood. His father was a Head Verger at Beverley Minster and St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Adam became a voluntary Verger at Beverley Minster in his teens, before going on to work at York Minster and then the Chapel at Lancing College.
He joins Lichfield from Winchester Cathedral where he’s been working since 2016.
Historically, vergers are responsible for the order and upkeep of a house of worship, including the care of the church buildings. At Lichfield Cathedral Adam is responsible for a team of Vergers who look after the mediaeval building as well as perform official duties during services.
Adam commented: “I come here with Lichfield as the third cathedral in my career thus far, alongside my fiancé Natalie who is an intensive care nurse.
“Having been a Verger since I left school I feel like I have a high level of knowledge about the role, but I am now looking forward to taking on the challenge and management side of the Dean’s Verger role at the Cathedral.
“I bring a lot of ideas, and I look forward to getting to know my fellow colleagues and congregation.”
“I think the main challenges are going to be learning a new style of management and learning how to fulfil my role in a way which will benefit everyone, establishing key relationships, training up new members of the team, and expanding volunteers in our team.”
