Christingles, Camels and Carols at Lichfield Cathedral
It’s Christingles, camels and carols at Lichfield Cathedral as Christmas Day approaches.
On Christmas Eve (Friday 24 December) at 3pm, the Cathedral clergy, staff and volunteers will take to the stage for the annual Crib service. Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey will all be there, with appearances by angels, shepherds, wise men and a camel. Children are invited to come dressed as their favourite character from the Nativity. And this year the service will include the distribution of Christingles.
A spokesperson for the Cathedral said, “Our wonderful volunteers have spent the day putting together Christingles, which are oranges wrapped in red tape, decorated with dried fruit or sweets, with a candle on the top. Each of those elements has a special meaning which will be revealed in the service on Christmas Eve. We’re looking forward to a fun-filled service which reminds us of the story which lies at the heart of our Christmas celebrations.”
Later on Christmas Eve there will be the opportunity to enjoy a traditional, reflective service of ‘Lessons and Carols’ with Lichfield Cathedral Choir at 6pm, and Midnight Mass will take place this year at 10pm. The main Christmas Day service will be held at 10.30am with Carols at the Crib at 4pm.
Everyone is welcome to the services and no tickets are needed. Visitors are asked to check the Cathedral website (www.lichfield-cathedral.org/Advent) for full details, covid measures and any last minute changes due to the ongoing pandemic.
