Lichfield Cathedral hosts the premiere of climate change film

Lichfield Cathedral is to be the venue for the premiere of a new film ‘All Creation Waits’, the film of a dance theatre performance of  the story of St Francis and St Clare in the context of climate change.  The film will be shown in the Cathedral on Sunday 5th September at 6.30pm. Originally a live performance, the piece had to be filmed due to the Covid pandemic. The renowned poet, singer-songwriter and priest, Malcolm Guite, will be present to help lead the discussion which will follow the film.

In the film, two children worried about climate change ask St Francis and St Clare for help inspiring people to address our environmental emergency and save the planet. All Creation Waits is the story which follows, imagining a contemporary Francis and Clare, coming to terms with the need to leave their existing lives and join the movement for change. It is the story of a growing friendship between Clare, a symbol of the earth herself, wounded and desecrated, and Francis, who is first disturbed by Clare’s arrival before being ultimately transformed through their relationship.

The piece is created by Claire Henderson Davis, (who also made Passion, which came to Lichfield Cathedral in 2015), Fraser Paterson and Ian Bysh.  The text is by the renowned Malcolm Guite with a soundtrack by Gary Lloyd.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Claire Henderson Davis and Malcolm Guite.

A Cathedral spokesperson said, “As the news continues to remind us of the reality of climate change, and as the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow draws nearer, we’re all encouraged to do all we can to better understand our relationship with our planet, the damage we have done and how we might be able to help it to heal. We at the Cathedral are pleased to be able to offer a space in which these issues can be thoughtfully considered.”
