A Virtual Advent Sunday Carol Service at Lichfield Cathedral
So far this year, as a result of the current pandemic, we have all experienced dark times. Signs and messages of hope are crucial to sustaining us all and this weekend marks the start of Advent, a time of expectation and hope – the beginning of the Church’s year. Advent reminds us that the gift of Jesus Christ arrived in the world at a dark time, bringing with him the promise of eternal life.
Over the centuries church services have used this imagery, with Advent Sunday traditionally seeing a Carol Service which begins in total darkness with a single candle flame being passed from candle to candle until the whole building is a beacon of light; the promise of hope in a dark world.
Lichfield Cathedral would normally welcome over 1000 people on this weekend with its Advent Sunday Carol Service. Unfortunately, under the current restrictions, people will not be able to attend. However, Lichfield Cathedral would like to invite you to join them for a virtual re-creation of this quite moving Advent service on Sunday 29 November at 18:00 via YouTube (link coming soon).
The Cathedral may stand empty, but the flame of that single candle is still spread throughout the building, offering the Light of Hope. Lichfield Cathedral invites you to take time out of your Advent Sunday evening, light a candle, turn off the lights and bring the atmosphere of this transformative service into your own home.
Join us here for the online service at 18:00 on Sunday 29 December
