St Chad’s Day Celebrations
The cathedral is one of the oldest places of Christian worship in the country and was founded as the burial place of the great Anglo-Saxon missionary and the first Bishop of Lichfield to whom the Cathedral is dedicated.
Chad was born around the year 634 and when appointed Bishop of Mercia he chose to centre his administration in Lichfield.
He died in 672 and his successor, Bishop Hedda, consecrated the first cathedral on his burial site on Christmas Day in the year 700.
Chad is remembered as a pious man whose decision to build a Church community at Lichfield was incredibly important in the development of the city.
Two principle services to mark St Chad are to be held on Monday 2 March at 17:30 - Festal Evensong with the Commemoration of Benefactors, and Sunday 8 March at 10:30 - Patronal Eucharist.
The cathedral is currently involved in raising money for a major new public sculpture of our patron saint by artist-in-residence Peter Walker.
The statue of St Chad will be cast in bronze and situated in The Close facing Dam Street. It will be a lasting monument to this central figure in Lichfield’s history. More than 80% of funds for the statue have now been raised but we need help to raise the rest.
Cheques for the statue appeal should be made payable to Lichfield Cathedral and sent to St Chad Statue Appeal, Chapter Office, 19a The Close, Lichfield, WS13 7LD
Donations by BACS should be made to Lichfield Cathedral and include the reference CHAD: Lichfield Cathedral, Acc No: 03803252, Sort Code: 53 70 15
