Take ‘One Small Step’ on the Moon at a Church Near You
In 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to step foot on the moon’s surface, uttering the now famous phrase “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” – an event that captured the world’s attention and sparked its imagination.
Last year in recognition of the anniversary of the moon landing, Lichfield Cathedral hosted a large-scale art installation by Artist Peter Walker entitled ’One Small Step’.
‘One Small Step’ pays tribute to the daring feats of space exploration and humanity’s curiosity and sense of adventure. Using actual NASA imagery of the moon’s surface, the art installation allows visitors a once in a lifetime opportunity to take a walk on the moon.
Over the Summer of 2019 tens of thousands of visitors walked on the moon inside the stunning mediaeval Cathedral. The interactive artwork was so successful that Lichfield Cathedral is taking parts of the large-scale piece on tour to selected churches in the Diocese of Lichfield. Reaching to the four corners of this geographically diverse diocese, the ‘One Small Step’ tour in Spring 2020 will give even more people a chance to walk on the moon.
All four of the selected churches will host a section of the ‘One Small Step’ art installation alongside activities for all ages run by artists who have been specially commissioned and funded by Arts Council England. Visitors will have the chance to participate in free artistic workshops that will take place on the surface of the moon, providing opportunities such as dance, creative writing, music, art in all different formats.
The installation opens up the opportunity to explore humanity’s place in the universe, life’s journeys and challenges, and provide space to contemplate in these sacred spaces.
Anyone is welcome to visit the installation during the opening hours of each church where people can walk on the moon, take a selfie #onesmallstep and take part in the various activities on offer.
The installation ‘One Small Step’ will be hosted at the following locations:
St Peter’s Church in Wolverhampton on 3 – 16 March 2020
