Cathedral wins prestigious tourism award
Staff and volunteers at Lichfield Cathedral are celebrating after being named as the silver award winner in the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year category of the Enjoy Staffordshire Tourism awards.
This is one better from the previous year when the cathedral was named as ‘highly commended’ for The Cathedral Illuminated attraction in the Event of the Year category.
The tourism awards are made each year by Destination Staffordshire, the official tourist board for Staffordshire dedicated to raising the profile of the county as a quality destination.
It is a partnership between the public and private with one common aim – to bring more visitors into the county.
It describes Lichfield Cathedral as a treasured landmark in the heart of the country that prides itself in offering a warm welcome.
There is plenty to explore with over 1300 years of history in the only medieval three spired Cathedral in the UK. See a medieval wall painting, the famous Herkenrode stained glass, the Lichfield Gospels dating from 700AD and the Lichfield Angel, as well as a packed and diverse programme of services, concerts and exhibitions.
The Cathedral is free to enter, although donations are welcomed
The Close surrounding the Cathedral also has its own story to tell, with picturesque gardens, stunning buildings and a vibrant history. A visit to Vicars’ Close is like stepping back in time with the row of quintessential medieval houses.
You can also pick up a unique gift or visit the gift shop and box office in the Three Spires Shopping Centre.
There is also Chapters, The Café in The Close, where you will find freshly prepared snacks, meals and refreshments.
The Dean, the Very Rev. Adrian Dorber commented on the award: “Great news. Thanks to everyone who has made this public recognition possible. It’s an immense affirmation of everyone’s contribution.”
