The Peace Woodland, located in Beacon Park, is a permanent living artwork created for Lichfield Cathedral and Lichfield District Council by Peter Walker Sculptor.
The work started in 2018 to mark a century since the end of World War One and to serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made in war and the ongoing need to strive and pray for peace in the world.
1918 trees, originally marked for removal, were saved by the Lichfield District Parks Team. A team of volunteers started planting them in Beacon Park on Armistice Day 2018, and for a time they were installed outside Lichfield Cathedral as part of the ‘Imagine Peace’ exhibition. The Peace Woodland was opened by leaders of the District Council and the Dean of Lichfield in Easter 2019 – a time to rejoice in new life, hope and the promise of peace on earth.
At the heart of the Peace Woodland is a bronze plaque engraved with people’s dedications to peace.
The Peace Woodland can be found at the Abnalls Lane end of Beacon Park, near the allotments.
