Key Stage 1: Discover the Cathedral
Aim of the tour: to provide a general overview of the history of Lichfield Cathedral and of Christian worship and belief.
· Explore the different areas of the Cathedral and how they are used.
· Find out about how a Cathedral is different to a church and why it is special to Christians.
· Learn about important symbols and gestures such as the cross, bread and wine and baptisms.
· Try using different forms of expression in the magnificent surroundings of the Cathedral, such as singing in the Quire or lighting a candle in the Lady Chapel.
· Think about the ways that we use the Cathedral today.
Key Stage 1: Special Occasions and Celebrations
Aim of the tour: To look at ceremonies in which special moments in the life cycle are marked in the church.
· Explore the different areas of the Cathedral and how they are used.
· Find out about how a Cathedral is different to a church and why it is special to Christians.
· Walk through and role play child friendly versions of baptism and wedding ceremonies in the beautiful surroundings of the Cathedral.
· Learn about important symbols and gestures which are related to marking special moments.
· Try using different forms of expression in the magnificent surroundings of the Cathedral, such as singing in the Quire or lighting a candle in the Lady Chapel.
Key Stage 2: Discover the Cathedral
Aim of the tour: to provide a general overview of the history of Lichfield Cathedral and of Christian worship and belief.
· Explore the different areas of the Cathedral and how they are used.
· Find out about how a Cathedral is different to a church and why it is special to Christians.
· Learn about important symbols and gestures such as the cross, bread and wine and baptisms.
· Discover unique artefacts from Lichfield’s history such as the Lichfield Angel and learn about important figures such as St Chad.
· Think about the ways that we use the Cathedral today.
Key Stage 2: Signs and Symbols
Aim of the tour: to examine signs and symbols used by Christians – these may be objects or symbolic gestures of worship.
· Think about how we define symbols and use them in everyday life.
· Learn about important symbols, such as the cross and dove and symbolic actions, such as lighting a candle, taking Communion and being baptised.
· Explore the different areas of the Cathedral and how they are used.
· Find out about how a Cathedral is different to a church and why it is special to Christians.
· Discover unique artefacts from Lichfield’s history such as the Lichfield Angel and learn about important figures such as St Chad.
Key Stage 2: Saints and Saxons
Aim of the tour: to explore the influence of the Anglo-Saxons on Lichfield Cathedral.
· Explore the development of Christianity among Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and communities, particularly Mercia.
· Discover unique Anglo-Saxon artefacts from the Cathedral’s history such as the Lichfield Angel and the Lichfield Gospels, and learn about why Lichfield was important.
· Learn about St Chad, the Anglo-Saxon holy man who became the first Bishop of Lichfield.
· Find out about how a Cathedral is different to a church and why it is special to Christians.
· Explore the different areas of the Cathedral and how they are used.
Key Stage 3: Discover the Cathedral
Aim of the tour: to provide a general overview of the history of Lichfield Cathedral and of Christian worship and belief.
· Find out about the importance of the services, sacraments and prayer in Christian worship.
· Discover what it means to be a modern pilgrim.
· Learn key historical events such as the English Civil War and how it shaped the story of the Cathedral.
· Discover Anglo-Saxon artefacts including the Lichfield Angel and Lichfield Gospels and learn about St Chad, first Bishop of Lichfield.
· Explore what part the Cathedral plays in the local community today.
