Baptism
Baptism (also called a ‘Christening’) marks the beginning of our lives as Christians within a worshipping community. You'd be very welcome to come and join that community on a Sunday morning and explore baptism for you or for your children. At Baptism we make promises to live as God’s children, and we are washed in baptismal waters and anointed with Holy Oil as a sign of God’s love for us. It is the beginning of your formal welcome in a Church and its congregation where you worship. Often babies are baptised. Parents and special friends, called ‘Godparents’, make those promises for them because they are too young to make them for themselves. As an adult you can make those promises and then go on to be confirmed by the Bishop - a sign of your full membership of Christ’s church. If you are interested in exploring baptism for you or your child, then please get in touch with reception@lichfield-cathedral.org, and someone will get back to you to begin your journey in faith
Confirmation
In confirmation, people who have reached a maturity of faith and want to accept the baptismal promises made for them are blessed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and anointed with oil as at Baptism, as a sign of their uniqueness in God’s eyes. This service is led by the Bishop and there is generally a short course of conversations in groups to learn more about faith, and the explore the extraordinary gift of God’s love, and so that you can get to know other members of the congregation and faith community. You need no prior knowledge or qualification to take part in this, just an openness to listen to others and a willingness to learn more of God’s unique love for you. Why not be in contact reception@lichfield-cathedral.org to find out more.
Marriages
We are delighted that you are thinking about getting married, and that you’re considering having your marriage blessed by God. Cathedrals have slightly different rules from a parish church, and you generally need a connection to be married in them. Why not get in touch with reception@lichfield-cathedral.org, to find out more.
