the FRIENDS OF LICHFIELD CATHEDRAL
“…one of the finest and most beautiful in England, especially for the outside, the form and figure of the building, the carv'd work'd, imagery, and the three beautiful spires; the like of which are not to be seen in one church, no not in Europe.” - Daniel Defoe
Founded as a separate charity in 1937 (Reg No 1102791), the Friends of Lichfield Cathedral currently have over 800 members, from all walks of life and all corners of the world. The aims of The Friends of Lichfield Cathedral are:
-To draw into fellowship the people of the Diocese of Lichfield and the wider community in service and devotion to God and loyalty to the Cathedral.
-To assist in the work of repairing and preserving the fabric of the Cathedral and its precincts, its furnishings and vestments and to beautify it with special gifts.
-To support the worship and music of the Cathedral Church.
Most Friends join as individual members, however companies can also join!
All Friends share a common belief in the importance of the spiritual and community work of the Cathedral, as well as preserving the history and heritage of the Cathedral and The Close. All members support the work of the Friends through a small annual subscription, and many also attend the various fundraising events in support of the Cathedral or remember the Friends charity through a legacy in their Will.
The Friends have achieved so much already. We'd like to invite you to join our journey and help us preserve the beauty, traditions and fellowship of this special place by becoming a Friend of Lichfield Cathedral today. Every year the Friends grant funds to Lichfield Cathedral in response to requests for support for ongoing conservation, enhancement, restoration and advancement projects. This is alongside the encouragement of worship and supporting the faithful in the community. They have provided pivotal funds for a wide range of Cathedral work in recent years, including:
-Restoration of the Friends Gallery above the West Door
-New display cabinets for the Lang Lichfield Silver Collection
-Substantial funding towards the restoration of the Lady Chapel, including the restoration work to the famous Herkenrode glass windows
-Funding for the Festal Frontal for the High Altar.
-The funding for new pendant lights in the Cathedral as part of a major lighting and rewiring project.
The Friends have also generously supported Lichfield Cathedral Choir, including funding choristers, choir recordings and commissioned works, and contributing to a new Chamber Organ through a Music Campaign.
The Friends have plans to continue the work to preserve, enhance and conserve the Cathedral moving forward. There is so much to do, and so much the Friends plan to do, to ensure that present and future generations can enjoy the beauty and spirituality of the Cathedral and the Close.
