Worship at Lichfield Cathedral

Lichfield Cathedral Service Lichfield Cathedral Service

The worship of God has taken place in Lichfield Cathedral for more than 1300 years. The Offices of Morning and Evening Prayer are recited daily. In the mornings we use Common Worship Daily Prayer; the evening office is sung according to the Book of Common Prayer during term-time and most weekends of the school holidays by our own cathedral choir or visiting choirs.

These offices (from Latin officium = ceremony, service, duty) consist of two Scripture readings, the recitation of the psalter, canticles of praise and intercessory prayer for Church and world. The Holy Eucharistic is also offered daily.

The outline below may change, particularly over Christmas and Easter.

See our Music List for full daily listings.

Monday to Friday:

7.30am - Morning Prayer and Eucharist

9.30am - Eucharist

5.30pm - Choral Evensong*

Saturday:

12noon - Eucharist

5.30pm - Choral Evensong

Sunday:

8.00am - Holy Communion

10.30am - Sung Eucharist

3.30pm - Choral Evensong

* Evensong on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays is usually sung by Boys’, Men’s and Girls’ voices respectively, though from September 2011 this pattern may change. The girls belong to Lichfield Cathedral School Girls’ Choir. Thursday Evensong is sometimes sung by a visiting choir, or replaced by a said service of Evening Prayer (Common Worship Daily Prayer). This pattern is sometimes also prone to change owing to the falling of Principal Festivals and Holy Days.
